It's The little Things

Like so many photographers, I’m a weekend warrior – out exploring nearby woods, trails, mountains and seashores that are an hour or two from my front door. Many of these trails are heavily traveled by locals and tourist alike, making them difficult to photograph even early in the morning and late at night. I realized while processing several images from recent trips that I started looking past the “hero shots” and started looking for the little scenes that so many people walk past time and time again.

The following five images are a collection of those little scenes from Shenandoah National Park. (Hover over each image to read the description)

Little Rapids

This image was taken among the larger cascading rapids of Crabtree Falls - one of the tallest waterfalls in the US. The quiet scene brings me a sense of calm and tranquility. (Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia)

Zen

Also taken among the more massive falls of Crabtree Falls. I walked past this image a few times waiting for the light to be right. This image was inspired by my wife who always finds quiet and peace in our crazy lives. (Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia)

Little Falls

This falls (about 3 feet in height) starts the Rose River in Shenandoah, a large river with numerous falls and swimming holes. I walked away a bunch of images that day, but I keep coming back to this one. It is quiet, subtle and gives me a sense of peace. (Shenandoah National Park, Virginia)

Alone

I am someone that always finds plants and the places where they can survive amazing. This lonely tree sits along the cliffs of Humpback Mountain. (Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia)

Little Oasis

There is something about these little-hidden spots that I love to photograph. This image was on top of an 81-foot waterfall and about 10 feet off the trail. I wonder how many people walked past this spot. (Shenandoah National Park, Virginia)
